Harsh weather threatens poultry farms in the north

Poultry farmers have been hit by heavy losses as their birds are dieing under the harsh 'northern winter'.

The supposed 'northern winter' currently experienced in the region is not only posing challenges to humans, but also animals. With temperatures hovering around 15 degrees, the current cold wave has greatly affected both domestic and wild birds.

Owners of poultry are experiencing great losses due to the fact that their fowls cannot withstand the icy cold winds blowing in the region. Among the many challenges their birds face some hens have problems hatching their chicks.

In the homes of most breeders and owners of poultry, their backyards are filled with death chicken. As a result, some farmers are killing their birds to be sold on the market at very low prices.

Among the towns experiencing this are the three border departments of Nigeria; Mayo-Tsanaga, Mayo-Sava and the Logone and Chari.

Local officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and rural development have rated the cereal deficit of the same area at 132,000 tonnes with food needs estimated at more than 770,000 tonnes.
