HACIG members upgrade human rights skills

A two-day seminar to that effect kicked-off in Douala on July 15.

Cases of human rights abuse abound in the country. Some person’s rights are violated because they are ignorant of the law.

In prison milieus, some detainees are asked to pay bail fees of FCFA 13,500 which is illegal. Upon completion of jail term, some are still pay money before they are finally set free which is illegal.

Reason why the High Commission for General Intervention (HACIG) with the expertise of the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedom (CNDHL) are edifying some members of HACIG on the mechanism on the promotion and protection of human rights.

Opening the two-day seminar in Douala, Littoral’s Regional Secretary of CNDHL, Marie-Claire Konkombo, said it is difficult to work on the field without operational techniques.

They have to master laws on human rights defence and work together in a bid to eradicate human rights abuse in Cameroon.

In the presence of the High Commissioner for General Intervention, Dr. Edgard Abesso Zambo, the Assistant High Commissioner for Cameroon and CEMAC, Dr. Michel Kimbi Manghe, disclosed that people are not supposed to be detained for more than three days without sending the case to the State Council.

The team will carry out weekly control in prisons, check corruption and illegal detention.
