Fighting Boko Haram: Defence chiefs revise operational strategy

Chiefs of defence staff of the Lake Chad Basin Commission and the Republic of Benin have taken part in a special meeting in Yaounde the evaluate the activities of the Multinational Joint Task Force fighting Boko Haram and chart the way forward.

The high-level meeting, which is the first of its kind since the forcefully went operation in 2015, was presided over by Cameroon’s Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Defence, Joseph Beti Assomo.

He enjoined participants to make franks proposals that will contribute in efficiently eradicating the Boko Haram terrorist group which he described as “Monsters”. He also saluted the collaboration and strong cohesion between the different deployments that are fighting the Boko haram phenomenon in three different sectors.

Joseph Beti Assomo said decisions taken at the Yaounde meeting will mark a milestone in the fight against the Boko Haram terrorist group which has been reduced uncoordinated suicide attacks, landmines and suicide bombings.

He used the occasion to reaffirm Cameroon’s firm engagement to continue the war against the Boko Haram terrorist group alongside international partners until the terrorists are completely eradicated.

The Executive Secretary of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, Sanusi Imran Abdullahi in his keynote address attributed the successes recorded by the Multinational Joint Task Force to a high level of engagement and synergy between troops of the different countries involved.

Some of the key issues handled in the in camera discussions include amendments to some provisions of the organic text of the force and the reorganisation of the sectors of the country as well as intelligence sharing in a made to improve synergy and coordination during feature measures of the force.

The high-level meeting is a follow up an experts meeting that examined the force and proposed amendments to be examined by the defence Chiefs of Staff of member countries.
