Far North: Five dead in floods at Diamaré

Flood Flood

The Ndoukoula district has paid the heaviest price, with three deaths recorded, after the floods caused by heavy rainfalls.

One victim who was carried away by the strong current was found in a neighboring village in the Gazawa district.

The other two victims were crushed by a wall that collapsed on them during the heavy rain. In the third district of the city of Maroua, two deaths were also recorded; a young man and a woman. The man's body was found in a downstream in the district of Bogo. However, this toll could go up due to four missing persons after the August 28 floods.

With regard to material losses, there were many destroyed properties. According to the information from the Diamaré prefecture in Maroua, the flood destroyed about 40 houses in the first district of the city of Maroua, 23 in the district of Gazawa and 31 in the district of Bogo. In the districts of Ndoukoula, Pette and Dargala, many roads covered with water have made the movements of vehicles difficult for more than 48 hours.

Faced with this disaster, Ernest Ewango Butu, the prefect of Diamaré instructed his employees to undertake an inventory and assessment of losses in all localities. The results of these investigations will be revealed next week, given the impracticality of certain roads since the floods.

These data, when gathered, will be brought to the attention of the management of civil protection for possible assistance to those affected.
