FCFA 24 Million Mbaa Water Project Commissioned

The first phase of the Mbaa Water Project in Nkambe Subdivision, Donga-Mantung Division of the North West Region was on Saturday, March 15, 2014 commissioned by local administrative authorities in the presence of representatives of Guinness Cameroon that funded the FCFA 19 million undertaking under its 'Water For Life Project. The event was also attended by traditional rulers or Fons and local dignitaries.

The project that began in February 2013, saw Guinness supporting it with FCFA 19.6 million, while FORCE-CAM and the community contributed FCFA 3 million and FCFA 1.4 million respectively. Executed by a Bamenda-based charity, FORCE-CAM, the whole project is to increase the supply of portable water to 12,000 inhabitants of Mbaa village and other five villages of the Mbuwarr community.

The first phase that was inaugurated over the weekend entailed the construction of a stream intake, sedimentation, up-flowing-roughing filter and slow sand filter tanks. A pipeline network of 2 km was laid, release/drain valve chambers and a dam wall attachment to the stream intake built. Similarly, community water management staff were trained.

Speaking at the event, the President of FORCE-CAM, Yuniwo Edison said the implementation of the project was a very inspiring and challenging accomplishment to his charity. This, he explained, was because of the strategic importance of the project in delivering water to the Mbuwarr community and the endurance of project staff.

The second and final phase of the project begins next week and is expected to be completed by June 2014. It will receive almost the same level of financial support from Guinness Cameroon, FORCE-CAM and the local community. The focus will be on constructing two more tanks, 18 public stand pipes, five wash-out tanks, valve chambers and the laying of a 2.3 km pipeline network.
