Douala Floods Douala Floods

Many neighbourhoods in the city of Douala have suffered from severe flooding after heavy rains on Saturday night.

"I have never seen such flooding in my life. The water has invaded even the buildings." This was the sentiments of John Balog, the president of the 3rd division football club Authentic FC.

The football club leader said it took him over an hour to get to the Reunification Stadium at Makèpè in Bépanda on a motorcycle to supervise the second division championship matches. He said the city of Douala was submerged in the floods of Friday night through to Saturday with entire houses swallowed up.

The rising water has forced inhabitants to take refuge on top of their houses invaded by water. Traffic was cut in several parts of the city.

Logpom, Bedi, Akwa-Nord, Kotto Makepe which are seen as more urbanized and without great risk and danger were not spared by the floods including areas like Sable and Makepe Missokè or Ndog Mbé St. Thomas.

The Akwa Mall in Bonabéri across the bridge was heavily affected by the fury of the water.

Some victims and eye-witnesses blamed a waterway, which has not been demarcated by the Urban Community of Douala, as the cause of the flooding. "The water is all over the place," said a resident by the river in an interview with Equinoxe TV.

The authorities have a fair share of the blame for the damage caused by the floods as an urbanization plan has still not been developed causing the nightmare of the people of Douala to always resurface at the start of the rainy season. Many are already scared of the impact of the next set of rains to hit the city.

The number of casualties has not been confirmed, however, firefighters are engaged in rescue activities.
