Colonel Owona to be sanctioned for embezzling military donations

Colonel Claude Martin Owona of the Air Base 101 of Yaounde, who was appointed to assume office March 16, 2015, was sacked Tuesday, May 12, 2015 for allegedly embezzling donations for the army.

Col. Owona who served only 58 days in his position that proved to be very lucrative has been replaced with Colonel Alfred Mvondo Menyengue.

According to security sources, the senior officer of the Cameroonian army and some of his aides are accused of embezzling donations for the soldiers engaged in the war against the deadly Boko Haram militants.

The embezzlement started the very day on the day Col. Owona was installed to his office, as per reports from our sources.

The Minister of Defence, Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo'o, entrusted the donations to his superiors, who had at their disposal, donations in-kind (plantains, rice bags, yams , meat, bottled water, soap, sardines, bean bags, oils, pasta, flour, milk, etc.) offered by people, traders and several other organizations.

But a few weeks later, rumours were rife that these donations have ended up on sale on the black market. Following the alert, the network was dismantled. Those involved in the hijacking in both military and civilians will be brought to justice.

Exactly one year ago, President Biya, supreme commander of the armed forces, declared war against the terrorist group Boko Haram.

Interestingly, information from some soldiers engaged in the war at the Far North call relatives to tell them of their miserable living conditions, indicating that the donations collected do not arrive at their camps.
