Canal 2 International accused of promoting homosexuality

Canal 2 Canal 2

The TV channel, Canal 2 International, in Cameroon is back on the dock for "promotion of homosexuality".

A correspondence has been addressed to the Director general of the private media, Eric Fotso, by the Cameroon League of consumers (LCC).

"Your channel broadcast for some time a series called « Double jeux ». The episode of Tuesday, July 07 and replayed the next day, shows a scene where two women kissed: a serious indecency and indecent exposure. Cameroonian viewers are deeply shocked that homosexuality is promoted through your channel with a very large audience," indicates the letter signed by one of the regional presidents of the LCC, Alphonse Ayissi Abena.

He argues that his association simply expresses "mainly discontent from citizens of all backgrounds, outraged by the dissemination of this scene."

Mr. Ayissi Abena requested from the boss of Canal 2 International to suspend the program « Double jeux ».

In September 2013, the TV channel, which boasts the largest audience in Cameroon, had also been accused of promotion of homosexuality by Sismondi Barlerv Bidjocka, leader of the rally of the association Rassemblement de la jeunesse camerounaise (Rjc). At that time, they denounced the soap opera 'Irrational heart’.

The DG of channel 2, Eric Fotso, has said that the theme of homosexuality is under debate in the film and not in promotion and that the shocking scenes and dialogues had been edited.

In Cameroon, homosexual acts are punished by article 347 of the Criminal Code which States: "is punishable by imprisonment from 6 months to 5 years and a fine of 20 000 to 200 000 FCfa for anyone who has sexual intercourse with a person of same sex."
