Cameroonian police engage in video surveillance

In order to boost operational technological capabilities, a video intelligent urban surveillance system was tested on 07 August 2014, at the General Delegation of national security in Yaoundé.

Yaoundé, Douala, Garoua-Boulaï, Kye-Ossi, Waza, Kousseri are targeted cities for the pilot urban monitoring system project, led by the Cameroonian police forces.

According to experts, this system will put an end to attacks and accidents that unnecessarily disturb traffic, causing huge waste of time and money.

The country is now using this latest video surveillance system that collects images in real time for better security.

The project was presented on 7 August , in the presence of Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, Secretary General to the Presidency of the Republic.

According to Martin Mbarga Nguelé, this meets the needs of security, and that of the fight against "juvenile delinquency, the increasingly growing number of refugees, and above all, Boko Haram.

The leader of this system clarified that, "we do not want to monitor populations, but we want to ensure their safety. We shall inform the population so they do not get alarmed. This system is an efforts to make them feel reassured because we are in a period of high security".

It is therefore on the basis of a partnership between Camtel, Huawei and the DGSN that this project will be finally realised. Camtel, has a role as specialist in the field, Huawei as a provider of all the material used and the DGSN responsible for its proper use on the set of the first targeted cities.

Received and installed equipment so far rates little close to 70 wired cameras, 48 portable cameras, 20 wireless cameras, 05 transceivers and 10 other posts, distributed through the 06 cities which are home to the pilot project.

02 blocks complete this picture: a server, which can keep the images for almost 90 days and block energy, storing at height of 48 h, the energy that powers the device.

For the sake of security the exact places of storage of these facilities were not disclosed.
