Cameroon ranked fourth country in the world with more entrepreneurs

Yaounde Yaounde

According to the classification established by the British "Approved Index" group , 13.7% of the Cameroonian populations are working based on theri own account.

Uganda is the first on the continent and globally.

The United States of America, leading economic power in the world and regularly cited as an example for its liberal model and promoting entrepreneurship, is not the country that has the most entrepreneurial adult population.

This was the conclusion derived by the British group of business networks Approved Index, a report released in late June 2015.

Cameroon in the top 5

The first country in the world with the most entrepreneurs was rather found in Africa, in Uganda. More than a quarter of the population (28.1%) of Ugandans are entrepreneurs; a country that has experienced decades of dictatorship. The efforts of the Ugandan authorities, for example, by deploying fiber optic cable in remote villages, were elements of this success.

The second African country among the top 10 of this ranking was Cameroon which occupied the fourth place. Cameroon was behind Brazil (3rd) but ahead of Vietnam (5th), Angola (6th), Botswana (8th) and Chile (9th). According to officials of the Approve Index group, which is based on the results of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor - 2014, Cameroon has 13.7% of self-employed in the adult population, including many people who find themselves in services and food industry.

France among the last five

The United States of America placed 41st with 4.3% of entrepreneurs in the adult population. They were behind Great Britain (37th) with 4.6% of being self-employed.

France was in the list of the least enterprising country with only 1.7% of registered self-employed; ahead of Japan (1.3%), Italy (1.3%), Puerto Rico (1.3%). Suriname (0.2%) was in last place.

Indicators

The ranking was based on the percentage of the adult population in a given country that owned or co-owned a company which has already paid salaries for three months or more.

The fact that the most developed countries are not the ones where we find the greatest entrepreneurs is explained by the report. "In countries where the economy is poorer, where unemployment rates are high, people are channeling into creating their own business as soon as they see the opportunity,” justified Trilby Rajna, from Approved Index.
