Cameroon and 7 other African countries to reach the MDGs against hunger

Yaounde Yaounde

Cameroon, Gabon, Angola, Djibouti, Ghana, Mali and São Tomé and Príncipe are the seven countries that have achieved the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and targets of the World Food Summit in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.

These 7 countries have managed to halve the proportion of people who suffer from hunger and undernourishment in their countries.

The countries were able to achieve their core objectives since they invested more than others, particularly in agricultural productivity.

However, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) stated in its report that progress towards full realization of the 2015 food security objectives have been hampered in recent years by a difficult economic world.

Even with this considerable progress, over 11 million people are suffering from hunger.

The report also revealed that one in three people suffered from undernourishment in SSA 25 years ago but it is now one in four. “This is a trend that affects the whole planet as the number of people suffering from hunger is declining everywhere”, said the FAO.

While these figures are encouraging, the FAO said the sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rate of undernourishment in the world, which is 23.2%.

Over time, the crises have evolved. They are minor in the short term but worse in the long run.

These prolonged crises such as the Ebola virus have caused damage in West Africa, a highly significant growth area.

The FAO still remains positive and hope that other countries meet their MDG targets.
