Cameroon-US security a priority

The Ambassador of the United States to Cameroon, Michael Hoza had a meeting with students at International Relations Institute of Cameroon (IRIC) on making security a priority as part of the diplomatic forum organized by the institution.

The discussion held on Monday was to have a clear idea of the direction of foreign policy of the United States under the Obama era at the IRIC.

According to the American diplomat, "the goal of the United States government is simple. Promote peace and prosperity of American citizens. And in its international relations with other countries, the US government is pursuing the same goal. Thus, regardless of the part of the world where any of its diplomat was sent, heist works strictly in this light”.

"In our bilateral cooperation with Cameroon, we focus on safety," said Michael Hoza. This materializes in various aspects since Cameroon is located in a sub region in which some neighbours live in situations of instability.

The Central African Republic was the main focus because Cameroon made available a UN contingent to participate in the maintenance of peace operations.

Insecurity is also present in the northern borders where Boko Haram claimed more victims than the Ebola hemorrhagic fever virus in three African countries.

Hoza emphasized that these are all reasons his country offered Cameroonian military support as part of strengthening their ability to defend its territorial integrity but also human rights.

"Because the key for us is to ensure the safety and rights of civilians at all times and in all places," added the diplomat.

The United States would also ensure that their oil companies working in the Gulf of Guinea will fight illegal dealings. "Hence our commitment to the Cameroon government to eradicate maritime piracy acts on the Gulf of Guinea," said Michael Hoza.

In terms of prosperity, the United States made an honour to fight the spread of HIV / AIDS. The head of the US diplomatic mission reassured the students and faculty of the IRIC that his country will continue its support in this direction.
