Cameroon Military Face Security Test

Under no circumstances has the Cameroonian military been faced with security challenges as is the case presently.

The military and its security services have been fighting a war on many fronts to stem the tides of insecurity that is threatening the peace that Cameroonians have been enjoying over the years. Cameroon is now surrounded by problems from its neighbouring countries which are all facing internal problems.

At the border with Nigeria, they are threatened by the Nigerian Islamic sect, Boko Haram that is threatening to make Cameroon one of its hubs of operation, has kept the army on its feet. Also, with the Central African Republic, CAR, sectarian violence in this region poses another security challenge to the country’s military. Meanwhile, pirates have continued to threaten security in the country’s maritime zone. Some military sources hold that the country’s security is more threatened now more than when Cameroon had problem with Nigeria over the bakassi peninsula in 2001.

However, the current recruitment of soldiers was, somewhat, a response to the challenges. Also, there has been a meticulous reorganisation of the army and security services to face threats. Speculations are also rife that there is an ambitious plan to further render the military more professional as well as creating military basis in all the 10 regions of the country. Recently, the Minister Delegate at the Presidency of the Republic in charge of Defense, Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo’o has called for the collaboration of the population to help the army fight in order to safeguard the national territory. Mebe Ngo’o also called on civilians not to hesitate to inform the security whenever they witness any suspicious moves anywhere in the country.
