"Because I am A Girl Child" second phase launched

Some 5,000 girls are targeted in Yaounde II Sub-division by Plan Cameroon as part of efforts to promote education in the country.
The second phase of Plan Cameroon’s “Because I am a Girl Child Campaign” was officially launched yesterday July 15, 2014 at the Yaounde II sub-division, precisely at the Briqueterie neighbourhood in Yaounde.

The campaign targets some 5,000 to 6,000 girls in the Briqueterie neighbourhood in Yaounde because statistics revealed that girl’s education in that part of the town is low.

The project which runs for three years, is being funded by Plan France at the cost of FCFA 532,000,000.

Speaking to the press, the Deputy Country Director for Operations, Felix Addo-Nyarko said it is within the global campaign dubbed “Because I am a Girl.”

Plan Cameroon and its partners such as the Haoussa Women Association For Development (HAWAD) organised a workshop not only to launch the second phase but also to create an opportunity which will permit different stakeholders to properly understand the project objectives, the expected results and the responsibilities of each party in the implementation of activities.

It should be recalled that the first phase of the project, which was launched in November 2010 focused on encouraging girls to go to school, created an atmosphere through which girls could go to school, rehabilitated 44 schools, gave scholarships particularly to girls and most especially created income-generating activities through which parents could raise funds required for the girls to go to school.

For the second phase of the project, Plan Cameroon is going to consolidate its gains in the first phase while concentrating on income- generating activities which will permit parents to have the means to send the girls to school.

Plan’s campaign, “Because I am a Girl” aims to support millions of girls to get the education, skills and support they need to transform their lives and the world around them.
