The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, has condemned the suicide bombing in the North of Cameroon and has called for the strengthening of regional cooperation against the Nigerian Islamist group, Boko Haram.

Mr. Ban "strongly condemns" the attack which killed at least 11 people in Fotokol (extreme north of Cameroon) on Sunday evening, said a statement by the United Nations.

He "expresses his support to the Cameroon Government and the countries of the region and encouraged them to further strengthen their cooperation to counter the threat of Boko Haram".

Mr. Ban said he was encouraged by the measures already taken by the Cameroonian Government to combat Islamist insurgents and congratulated them for the reception of refugees fleeing the violence in the region.

Two female suicide bombers gave Cameroon its first suicide attack, causing at least 11 dead on Sunday evening at Fotokol, in the far North which is close to the Nigerian Islamist insurgents of Boko Haram
