The Mbengwi area was known to be an agricultural production area and was relatively prosperous. But today the scarcity of food causes tension that allays fears.

According to information obtained by The Daily Economy on Wednesday, July 15, 2015, Mbengwi located 22 km from Bamenda, the regional capital, is plagued by famine.

At the Nyen market, food was scarce even though the area has primarily been an agricultural zone for 500 years. A trader who spoke to the newspaper predicted that bumper harvest is not assured.

"Our young people prefer to work in construction sites in town and leave us with breeders who sell our lands and graze their cows on our fields ".

Not far away, the Nsang market which was constructed in 2009 through Stella Achu’s initiative, for selling gari also called tapioca, was practically abandoned.

Christopher Achobang, a human rights activist who also spoke to the newspaper, stated that the farmers were facing very hard times with severe grazing on their farmlands.

He explained, "People regularly come to complain that their fields were being destroyed by the Bororo herds. When they complained to the administration, they gave the excuse that farmers had more money because they can sell an ox of about 300 000 FCFA to corrupt officials."
