American People promote english teaching in Cmr

Recently, Government of Cameroon officials, educators, and students lauded U.S. Department of State English teaching programs sponsored by the American People at the 2014 Cameroon English Language and Literature Teachers' Association (CAMELTA) National Congress attended by over 300 guests.

The event was held at the Catholic University of Central Africa in Yaoundé, and featured remarks by U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Officer Roberto Quiroz II, Secretary of State for Secondary Education, Mr. Mounouna Foutsou, and Secretary General of the Ministry of Basic Education Professor Ivo Leke Tambo.

Mr. Quiroz awarded certificates to seventeen Cameroonian educators who completed English language teaching training courses, including three participants in the ten-week “E-Teacher” training course at the University of Oregon, and seventeen participants in the “Shaping the Way We Teach English, Course 13” webinar series.

In his remarks, Mr. Quiroz underscored the United States’ commitment to promote education, adding: “As President Obama has said, access to an education and empowering women and girls are essential elements for promoting development in every nation, including in the United States. Today we celebrate your achievements and dedication to excellence. The Department of State is committed to providing quality educational programs that meet the professional development needs of participants, including through our Regional English Language Officer, whose efforts are focused on expanding access to English language learning and enhanced teaching skills.”

In their remarks, Mr. Mounouna Foutsou and Professor Ivo Leke Tambo challenged students and professors to serve with excellence, and presented a certificate of recognition to the U.S. Embassy for its youth partnerships and support for the Government of Cameroon’s goals to expand access to quality education.
