Allowances of 400 teachers suspended

The Government has suspended the teaching and evaluation allowances of some 400 teachers of Secondary and Basic Education in Cameroon.

Victims to this decision have been asked to refund what they have enjoyed as allowances for seven years.

The teaching and evaluation allowance is a sum of 10,000 FRS CFA issued on 4th February 2002 according to presidential decree.

The decree further states that only teachers who are effectively carrying out duties are supposed to benefit and that the allowance can be suspended if the civil servant is no longer performing his duties or is transferred or appointed to another department. This decree was however put into effects from 2007.

Some teachers of Basic and Secondary Education, victims of such a circumstance attested that they went to the bank and unfortunately noticed that their allowances have been suspended. To this effect, authorities say, they will have to reimburse the amount received since 2007.

One of the victims affirmed that 150,000 FCFA has been deducted from his September salary and that he will have to pay back a sum of 1 million 131 FCFA according to a debit order signed by the secretary General at the Ministry of Finance.
