Abdoulaye Babale enjoined to restore serenity

The Chairman of the Electoral Board prescribed the strict respect of the laws while installing the new DGE into his new function on Friday July 24, 2015 in Yaounde.

A new chapter has opened at Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) following the appointment of a new Director-General of Elections (DGE) for a 5-year tenure of office on July 21, and his commissioning into functions Friday July 24, 2015, in Yaounde.

While installing Abdoulaye Babale as the new Director General of Elections at Elections Cameroon, the Chairman of the Electoral Board, Dr. Samuel Fonkam Azu’u, evoked Sections 9, 26 and 27 of the Electoral Code pertaining to his responsibility as the Director General of Elections.

According to the provisions of the Law which Fonkam Azu’u cited, the Director General is responsible for all election and referendum operations as well as administering ELECAM under the authority of the Electoral Board. “Your two main duties are therefore discharged under the authority of the Electoral Board. These legal directives are fundamental to the serenity and synergy within ELECAM”, Fonkam Azu’u stressed.

The Chairman of the Electoral Board further reminded the new Director General of Elections of the need for the strict compliance with the laws and hierarchy to restore serenity not only in the relations between the Electoral Board and the Directorate General but also to branches of ELECAM.

Abdoulaye Babale was urged to immediately buckle down to action by treating pending important files notably the installation of some Regional Delegates appointed by the Electoral Board and appointments of officials in positions at the decentralized services after approval of the Board.

The intensification of the annual revision of the electoral list which is due to end on August 31, 2015 also featured top on the President’s recommendations to the new DGE, commissioned in the absence of his predecessor.

The installation ritual was witnessed by Electoral Board members where Mr. Babale was before his July 21 appointment reason why the President is confident that the shadows of the past would not haunt the future of the structure charged for the organization, management and supervision of elections and referendums in Cameroon.

Abdoulaye Babale was born in Maroua in the Far North Region in 1946 and has held several portfolios including cabinet minister.
