The Minister of Housing and Urban Development (Minhdu) Jean-claude Mbwentchou was on the ground on Saturday, October 24, 2015, in the locality of Japoma / Bakoko suburb of Douala, Littoral region, to assess the work undertaken to build a football stadium to house some games of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2019.

Locally based bilingual government newspaper Cameroon Tribune reported on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, that Minister Jean-claude Mbwentchou and his delegation saw the progress of work with marked buildings to be destroyed on the now declared public utility site.

On the ??100 hectares land which will thus be cleared for the project, 60 hectares will be reserved for a sports complex that will contain among other things a field with 50,000 seats, two training stadiums, parking lots, a gym and a multi-sport complex of tennis.

Alongside this project, another equally ambitious project is next to the remaining 40 hectares, namely the construction of a small brand new city that would contain among other things a 5 stars hotel of 300 rooms, modern shopping center, luxurious homes, schools and sports complexes, etc.

"The site will coexist with the village community with the realization of a new city, which the government has approved. We must do everything so that these two projects coexist, instructions have been given for our employees to bring to bear these two projects. We came to deliver all the directives. We have a timetable and a deadline, studies should not exceed four months and we are willing to arrange for monitoring to be rigorous," Jean-Claude Mbwentchou told the press before taking leave of the people, elites, administrative authorities and technical staff who are already at work at Japoma / Bakoko. Completion is expected, according to the Minister, by the end of 2018, a few months before the start of the AFCON.
