At least 24 members of the Nigerian Islamist sect, Boko Haram, were killed when they attacked a military camp at the Far North in Cameroon on Tuesday according to a new unofficial assessment provided by sources within the defence and security forces.

The source stated that a group of Boko Haram fighters arrived at the Cameroonian territory around 03:00 local time (02 h 00 GMT) and headed towards the Bodo locality near the border with Nigeria. They attempted a bombshell attack at the base of the rapid intervention battalion (BIR, the Cameroonian army special force). In a state of alert, the Cameroonian military responded by opening fire on the attackers.

The first provisional toll immediately after the attack gave an account of three bodies of Islamists found near the military camp.

"We do not know the exact number of the attackers, but there are some who fled the scene", said an undisclosed source who spoke to Xinhua.

The new figure of at least 24 deaths followed after further investigation was carried out to verify if there was no danger around the BIR camp in Bodo where the return of relative calm was announced.

The Bodo camp is one of the many stations of the Cameroonian defence and security forces situated at the far North region to fight against Boko Haram with support of the Chadian army since mid-January.

This enabled the security forces contain massive attacks by terrorist group at the Cameroonian territory for several months.
