15 highway robbers killed in the East by gendarmerie

Fifteen highway robbers were killed by the national police in the east of the country, state radio reports on Saturday.

The highwaymen who were tracked by the police for more than three months, were killed after an information was provided by one of them.

"Arouna, one of the gang leaders in our custody decided to show us the hiding place of his accomplices. Two days ago, I sent the head of GPIGN, [a special unit of the gendarmerie responsible for combating organized crime] to the field. Our comrades found them in a meeting. The results, 15 dead and AK 47 recovered,” a Cameroonian senior officer said during an interview on state radio.

For several months, armed and unidentified individuals roam the eastern region of the country. They proceed to taking of hostages, attack cattle herders, rape and attack people. According to the high-ranking Cameroonian officer, “these are refugees who leave their refugee camps to take their weapons hidden elsewhere."
