Cameroon experiences drastic fall in the purchase of new vehicles

The purchase of new vehicles has witnessed a drastic fall in Cameroon for some years now; with 7000 new vehicles sold in 2010 to only 5000 vehicles in 2014.

According to the customs administration, this down slope could continue this year where it stands at 4500 vehicles.

The purchase of new vehicles necessarily follows the rise in the purchase of second-hand vehicles, including the accessible price for a larger number of people justified in all likelihood, by the purchasing power of Cameroonians.

However, deplored the officials of the Autonomous Port of Douala (PAD), these used cars which "most of them are in poor condition unnecessarily congest the port space".

To avoid the congestion of the fleet at the port of Douala, the Directorate General of Customs (DGC) announced that there will be an auction of second-hand vehicles which has been with the Customs for more than three months in September.

A few weeks ago, the National Assembly and the Senate who met in regular session voted a law on the creation of a Guarantee Automotive Fund (FGA) with specific provisions, also intended to reduce the import of second-hand vehicles.

According to estimates, the number of used cars stands at 97 000 per year against 5000 only for new cars.
