Cameroon had begun their competition with some new medals at the 2015 African Games, which started last week.

At a press conference, the delegation revealed that there were 15 medals won (4 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze).

Helene Wezeu notably won gold in judo on Sunday. In the absence of an official classification published by the organization of Brazzaville Games, it is difficult to know the countries that also won some medals. Adam Idrissa and Marie Gisele Eleme Asse were eliminated from 100m semifinals.

Mbumi ensures the triple jump

She is the undisputed queen of the triple jump in Africa and she was particularly expected in Brazzaville, especially after misfiring at the World Athletics Championships. But on Sunday night, Sandrine Mbumi did not disappoint by winning gold in the discipline. The 29-year-old Cameroonian had jumped 13.75 m, beating the Nigerian, Ibrahim Ibukun Blessing, (13.52 m) and the Ghanaian Nadia Eke (13.40 m).

The performance of the African champion, however, remains below her best record (14.16 m). “I am very happy with my performance, because I had the pressure. My medal will boost the Cameroon team. Now, I must get the minimum for the Olympics,” said Sandrine Mbumi after her title, the first in this competition.

Volleyball lionesses win silver

In terms of Volleyball, Lionesses contented well for the silver medal yesterday after they were beaten in the final by Kenya, 3 sets to 1. They had however started well by winning the first set but the African champions raised the score (15-25, 25-14, 25-15, and 25-19). The disappointment was a huge one for the Cameroonians, unbeaten so far, have taken over the same team in group stage (3-2). Like in 2011, this is another silver medal for the team.

Cameroon-Nigeria in women's football semi-final

Later in the afternoon, Indomitable Lionesses competed against Nigeria for the semifinal of the women's football tournament. Cameroon finished first in group B while Super Falcons finished in second place after a surprise defeat against Ivory Coast.

Lionesses enjoyed an unprecedented situation in their group that had three competing teams (Cameroon, South Africa and Ghana) each had two points. Enow Ngachu’s girls enjoyed the best defense (2 goals). Ghana had a tie with South Africa (one goal scored and conceded).
