Edea

Edea is a city located in the Littoral region of Cameroon on the Sanaga River and along the Trans Cameroon railway from Douala to Yaounde. It is the capital of the Department of Sanaga -Maritime.
The city is one of the few crossings to Sanaga between Douala and Yaounde. A bridge built by the Germans was in the early 80s the only point of passage of the train, vehicles and pedestrians on a single channel. It has been however, converted into a cycle path.
Edea is an industrial city known mainly for its aluminum industry. The factory was located on an island formed by an arm of the Sanaga to enjoy a waterfall and to produce electricity. It was for this reason that it is the first electric wired city of Cameroon. Aluminum production began in 1957, the plant then owned by ALUCAM, “Cameroon Aluminum Company”, a company jointly established by Pechiney Ugine. There is also a mechanical engineering and a bauxite mine. Around the city, there are many farms growing bananas, palms or cocoa. The Urban Community of Edea is the commune d'arrondissement of Edea.

The district administration ‘Edea 1’ is bordered to the north by the municipality of Ngwei, south by ‘Edea 2’ and to the east by the municipality of Fifinda. Edea is composed primarily of two townships, the township and the township Adie Yassoukou. The Edea’s population is predominantly rural.

Edea is one of the cities of Cameroon which houses an annual cultural event of nation. This famous event is the MPOO. It is celebrated to reunite MPOO son’s, and it’s celebrated during the month of December. It is celebrated by cultural fair and several activities such as canoe race, beauty pageant contest (Miss MPOO), traditional wrestling and others. All of these activities serve to perpetuate the culture of MPOO.
We can say without fear of error that the Catholicism was born in Sanaga - Maritime with the arrival of German father Pallotine Marienberg, formerly in Sobikat now Elog Ngango in October 1890. The team was welcomed by King Toko and the people of the village of Pungo Sungo. It is therefore right to ascribe Marienberg, first Pallottine Foundation, as the birthplace of the Cameroonian Catholic Church.
